چکیده

The noncorneal ERG is essential for certain patients in which corneal recording is contraindicated. A preliminary report is presented investigating ERGs from three noncorneal montages and their correlation with the corneal ERG. Statistical analysis showed that an electrode at the medial canthus combined with medial viewing gave the closest correlation to the corneal ERG. Repeatability was good for all montages. The inner canthus electrode was considered preferable for noncorneal recording because it was less affected by other time-locked activity; it correlated well with the corneal ERG and can be used in conjunction with the electro-oculogram.

Electroretinograms from noncorneal electrodes.

A. lthough it has long been known that retinal action currents are present, the electroretinogram (ERG) has not become the subject of detailed investigation in the human until recent years. Before Riggs demonstrated that the response might be easily recorded from an electrode supported by a contact lens, no satisfactory method for continuous recording from the human was available. This techniqu...

Validation of a new fiber electrode prototype for clinical electroretinography.

PURPOSE To validate a new fiber electrode prototype for clinical electroretinography (ERG). METHODS A recently developed prototype of a disposable reference-coupled fiber electrode (patent pending Brazilian Institute of Industrial Property # PI0602186-7), including one fiber for corneal signals and a second fiber acting as reference was tested in a group of 20 healthy volunteers (17-31 years;...

Vitamin A deficiency and corneal ulceration in south-east Nepal: implications for preventing blindness in children.

A retrospective review of the outpatient records of 4601 children aged 0-10 years who had been seen between January 1986 and December 1988 at Lahan Eye Hospital, south-east Nepal, revealed that 15.4% had evidence of active or past xerophthalmia. Of 293 children with corneal xerosis or corneal ulcer, 49% had been examined in the 4-month period May-August. The peak age for active noncorneal xerop...

Evaluation of different recording parameters to establish a standard for flash electroretinography in rodents

Different electrodes and stimulus protocols commonly used for electroretinography in rodent eyes were compared for convenience of use, degree of damage to corneal epithelium, and for magnitude of amplitude, reproducibility, left versus right eye accuracy, and reliability of recorded parameters of the flash electroretinogram (ERG). Adult C57BL/6 pigmented mice and albino Wistar rats were used to...

Non-invasive electroretinography.

Electroretinographic (ERG) investigations are conventionally performed by using corneal or conjunctival recording electrodes. Both types have to be placed in contact with the eye, resulting invasive and providing discomfort for the patient. This paper presents a simple technique to detect ERG potentials non-invasively. It relies on the use of a conducting liquid between the eye and an external ...
